After fighting Intel segments for years, I had an epiphany after reading an article in Dr Dobbs a few years ago. It was by Brett Glass, an all-around smart guy and former Amiga-head. He pointed out that segments aren't a bad concept – the problem was, the Intel CPUs didn't have enough selectors and the segment size was too large to be really useful. With zillions of selectors and tiny segments, we'd have great memory protection.
