I too have been perplexed by the complexity of trying to create lifelike animal animations and as such have given up except for two possibilities you might consider. Mannequin- will automate wireframes of basic movements for humans that can be morphed in 3DS. Morph is a bitmapped based software that has just been released for the PC two weeks ago and is selling for $74.00. It can be used to create morph transitions as well as warp of a given image then render sequentially numbered TGA's or develop a FLC file in 8 bit. This is the same as has been available on the MAC for six months now and what you see in the movies and commercials special effects. The low price is intro only and was available at comdex. I'll let you know how it works when it arrives. I saw the software turn a child into an old man through several stages of growing old.
