Glen,
From what I am told from Microsoft, their Encarta product is using SoftwareXA
from Mammoth Micro Productions. I *have not* seen Encarta, so I cannot say how
you can tell what type search engine it is, etc. It may not be obvious that
SoftwareXA is the engine. Using SoftwareXA versus implementing XA through
hardware does have a few minor drawbacks…. such as loss of sound quality and
a lost video frame every now and then.
