Glen, From what I am told from Microsoft, their Encarta product is using SoftwareXA from Mammoth Micro Productions. I *have not* seen Encarta, so I cannot say how you can tell what type search engine it is, etc. It may not be obvious that SoftwareXA is the engine. Using SoftwareXA versus implementing XA through hardware does have a few minor drawbacks…. such as loss of sound quality and a lost video frame every now and then. I have uploaded my latest article in Computer Digest… the file is called CD0793.ZIP and deals with what XA is, hardware, software, and the new Hitachi XA interface card. Howard, Thanks, I hope Rich releases your article this weekend so I can read it. I'll be interested in what SoftXA is. It's use in Encarta doesn't quite match what the SoftXA announcements I read lead me to believe. Glen

Howard, I just read your fine article (CD0793.ZIP) and am wondering if the new Hitachi XA interface will work with the 3600U (which I have), or if it must be the 3700 model. Do you know? It would be great if I could just switch the interface card and upgrade my CD drive! <g> Thanks for any info. John
