Tom,
not only does it reduce connector related problems, it is easier to
manufacture. Simply glue the chips down to the board and wave solder them
using a robot. Of course the soldering and glue makes it a pain to
replace them, as you have to cut the leads, break the chip off the board,
and then desolder each lead from the board. Not fun. I had to do it
exactly twice, and will never, EVER, do it again.
