EUREKA! Good for me, but bad for SunRize. I have narrowed down the problem to
a bug in the Studio16 3.0 program. They are working on 3.1 but they have some
more work to do. Tonight I went back to the previous version of Studio16,
version 2.08 to be precise. I used the TC window dub test tape I made and the
cuelist entry points prepared for that in ver 3.0. These entry points were cued
in as close as possible to cuts in the video.
I manually created a cuelist in 2.08 using these entry points. This was a 20
minute test. I ran it and the sound samples cued on time. This tells me that
there is nothing wrong with my TC or my system setup. Also the audio played
back at the speed it was recorded at. There is something wrong with the way
that version 3.0 is monitoring TC. Further to that observation, I was always
somewhat confused with the way 3.0 labelled its SMPTE choices in Preferences.
The first choice is 29.97 and the second 30 DF. To my understanding, 29.97 is
dropframe and 30 is non-dropframe. HOWEVER, changing these settings in 3.0
does not alter the output. I tested it all ways, preparing tapes with
dropframe and non-dropframe TC and playing them back, each with both settings.
The timing error persisted. In version 2.08, the SMPTE choices are labelled
correctly: 30 and dropframe.
I will be faxing SunRize tonight telling them of my findings. It turns out I
do not need their SMPTE output module, which hasn't arrived yet anyway. They
OWE me.
