If you're not, you might talk with some of the folks over in HAMNET who do packet radio; I do packet myself with a 1200 baud antenna over the 2m amateur band, and the range you're saying is comparable to a 2m signal at about 50 watts output power (I think that's about what I get out of my Yaesu FT-2400 – I've been off the air for a few months recently because I moved). My understanding of spread-spectrum technology is a bit shaky, but from a discussion I had with someone who was planning to build a spread-spectrum RF modem for use on packet, they'd be full-duplex, even allowing multiple receive with a single transmit; that could be quite interesting… Jim Read action !
