I'm the first to agree that it all _should_ work, and that the problem is growing more serious as CD-R discs become more common, and more people are discovering what their CD-ROM drives can't do. As you say, the problem is even more frustrating because the problems people have seem so random. Drive manufacturers appear to be waking up to it now — word has it that even NEC, whose attitude a few months ago was "that market is too small for us to care about", is redesigning its drives. Unfortunately, that does nothing for the people who already have NEC drives, unless they can supply a software fix. There is nothing we at Incat can do except warn people about potential problems, and I have been waiting to do that until I could gather some coherent data, although CD-R disc/CD-ROM drive incompatibility is discussed in two different places in the manual. We are also working with CD-ROM drive manufacturers who have asked us advice on making their drives compatible, notably Plextor (though they seem to have got it all right without our advice anyhow). Mitsumi will have to confront the problem head-on since they are now coming out with their own CD-R drive. Best, D'
