They said that this was one of their clients that had the problem and they ended up spending time at the client's site in order to figure out what the problem was. They said that they ended up putting the CD-R on a special surface that dampened all the vibrations and all their recording problems went away. I have no reason to doubt their veracity. It has been the subject of much conversation and we are purchasing wireless headphones for the operators so that they may listen to music in silence. Apparently as I have looked into this, the stereo system in the computer room cost several thousand dollars is capable of all sorts of interesting audio effects. And, we would never have suspected. Seems that the day shift is much more tame than the swing and occasional graveyard shifts. We're doing a "shift log" study to see if there is any relationship between the bad disks and the music preferences of the operators. Quite an interesting (unexpected) outcome:-)
