The 500's slot is very low down, making it difficult to produce a sturdy base
for a connection. With some peripherals I've seen for the 500, which stick up
higher than the top of the computer, it would be very easy to put a bit of
pressure in the wrong direction and have it stress or even break the connector.
(Something which sits under the 500 would be fairly good at this, though…)
As for genlocks, digitizers, whatever, not needing a power supply, you'd be
surprised. The 500 has almost *exactly* as much power left over to run one
external drive and the normal internal RAM. Anything else, forget it unless it
has it's own power supply. (I'm surprised… People are actually producing
peripherals for the 500 which *don't* have a power supply? Risky at best.)
