I may be wrong. I thought that the extra halfbright shifted the thing, as you
say, but that the bit that was shifted out to the right was retained. If it's
not, then there are only 16 grey levels, as you say.
However… if it's not, then that's really sad. it's such an easy thing to do.
I did an interface for the CoCo once that used an inter-pixel average to smooth
grey level images. The two incoming 4 bit words went into a dual four bit
adder; the adder had a four bit sum out, and carry. We used carry and the upper
three bits at the normal intensities, and the LSB as the 5th bit which had a
grey value of 1/2 the LSB. The bit is accurate in an averaging situation, of
course. The result was wonderful in that application.
I have to admit, it never even occured to me that CBM would design the thing so
that some of the useful information, already obtained within the available
bandwidth of the video accesses would be just thrown away. Oy!
