Our original goal was 75%-80% compatibility for properly written programs. I fail to see what is "foolish, inexperienced and incompetent" about that. There are significant advances in 2.0 from the programmer point of view; much work was was done on dos, intuition, etc. In the end, because of marketing pressures, we had to go for >90% compatibility, and also attempt to keep poorly written programs working. (This added significant time to the project, naturally). Backward compatibility is always a concern if you are maintaining an OS. It's kind of naive to believe otherwise.
