Dom, If Clinton were to push thru legislation to change America to the metric system, I'm fairly sure Joe Public would hate it. On the other hand, Big Business might get very enthusiastic when it saw the bucks to be made changing over, just think of the cost of road signs alone! I guess it will take several generations yet (if ever) before the world sees any real harmonisation, although the fact that I can chat casually with you and others here on CompuServe across a few thousand miles (and even more kilometres/kilometers 🙂 )may speed things up some.
