Matt,
Add an entry in Info/Configure/Map-Paths to include the directory
of any material from anywhere outside of the default mat-lib directory.
To scale in the editor, you can select object by name, select the pieces,
then modify/object [2D|3D]scale. In the keyframer, hierarchy-link the different
objects to a "dummy" object and scale the dummy object.
