The only OCR software I have any experience of is Migraph OCR on the Amiga. It comes in two versions, the Jr. version is fully functional and reads directly from your scanner. The more expensive version will accept either direct input from the scanner or will read an IFF file. OCR with a hand scanner is a bit of a pain in the neck. The main problem is scanning a column of text close to the spine of the book or magazine. I don't know if a flatbed would be much better here though. The Migraph OCR software is supposed to learn. It shows you any characters that it cannot understand and you tell it what they are. I haven't noticed much improvement so far but I probably just haven't been using it enough.
