Chris,
Sounds like you are really versed in A/B. I haven't done it yet and don't
know.
I didn't think there would be any way to alter tape speed. I figured you would
just be left with the same error accuracy as in cuts. ie, Pre-Roll which stays
pretty consistent.
I mean for example starting a record deck is really a function of the player
deck in that record (with the delay it has in actual recording from the time
the deck receives the command) will always start a certain # of frames before
the actual inpoint is reached.
Wouldn't an A/B roll occur the same way.
If I want to do a transition at point X from source A to B. Then I assumed
that with known delays for startup etc. Deck B would be pre-rolled to that
point and then so many frames prior to point X on Tape A Tape B would kick in.
I really didn't think there was any further refinements than that. They should
be pretty consistent figures just like a pre-roll, NO ??
Regarding my earlier msg in the thread about IMS not having a handle on the
VISCA Timecode. I retract that with those figures I posted. I had been using an
older tape dubbed with the code. My errors on that were more like in the + and
– 3 frames consistently. One error reached 4 frames. Thinking it may be a tape
problem, I used new tape for the source and record and came up with the much
better figures. Makes me seriously consider doing all my editing decisions on
a copy tape like I should've been already. Just save my master source for the
final edit.
Too bad the RC time code doesn't copy from tape to tape. Oh well, if I strip
both the master and copy at the same time they will be close. I could put a
little window dub at the beginning of each to see what the time difference was
between each and then just add or subtract that for the final edit. I'll have
to give it a try anyway.
