Sounds like like you've got a great handle on this stuff, Mark.
Sheesh, you sounded so knowledgable, I thought you were a veteran of this
industry that was swallowing a little too much SGI hype, so sorry about
sounding like you should have known better.
Like MartinF has said, if the quality of the hardware rendering is acceptable
for an application, then so be it. But the overwhelming majority of finished
production 3D work is (at least) phong-rendered, and takes MUCH longer, no
matter what you are using. Renderman is the best, but other worthy renderers
such as Wavefront's and 3DS's are used, too.
Re RAM requirements, I'd suspect that 128mb will be needed for medium-sized
jobs with MAX, more for the larger ones.
