Not all of the bands have subversive lyrics that subconsciously hypnotize you to become a drug addict, and even if they did I still wouldn't. Our current society tends to blame music for all the young adolescent problems, which is a direct reflection on the older generations inability to relate to the new issues facing the younger generation of today. There was the incident where a young guy killed himself after listening to Black Sabbath, so the band was instantly blamed for this unfortunate occurence. The fact is that the guy was already on the edge and was going to do it anyway, he simply had the music going when he decided to do it. In fact I was "into" some heavy metal music when I was younger Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc, and at no point did I have yurnings to kill myself. The music was, for me, a different form with more energy and volume. Not a new breed but a stronger variation on the existing music. If you listen to some of Metallica's lyrics you will find some fairly powerful messages. For instance their song "The Unforgiven". So I think everyone should stop blaming the music and look instead to the real cause of young people's problems and that is self-esteem. Without work, without education, without hope is a a very destructive situation that is only the beginning in a long line of problems that finally leads to the violence and suicide that often is the end product. <<But I never payed much attention to the lyrics.>> Then your seeing only half the picture.
