First fact of life: Hi-Fi sound is recorded along with the video on the same part of the tape. Yes, it stays there. Unless you do a video insert edit, in which case it will definitly be gone. If your JVC is like most high-end consumer decks, it will have a 3-way switch to chose what audio track is outputed. Either HI-FI, Linear or a Mix of the two. With a little pre-planing you can put the audio that goes with the picture on the Hi-Fi tracks, audio dub additional sound on the linear track and set the switch to Mix when copying from the edited master to VHS for the customer. I had one Sony deck (Remember SuperBeta?), that I could set to play the HI-FI tracks, run the audio out through a mixer, add other sound, and Audio Insert it, all in the same pass. It would be worth a try to see if your deck can do that. Good luck, Don James TCR
