McGlassOnion, Music is the universal language. It is a reflection of the soul. As such, it reveals much about the condition of the person who enjoys a particular vein of music. It is obvious that if rap music does not appeal to you, then it does not speak to your soul or reflect your condition. Rap music does, however, reveal truths about the people who perform it and the people who enjoy it. It's roots are in class struggle. As are the roots of jazz, blues, country & western, and rock and roll, etc. Blues sprang forth out of depression over living and working conditions. Rock and Roll was born out of rebellion. Country and Western lyrics are rife with the mournful dirge. While you may find much of rap music hard to digest, in my eyes, rap music is born from the same conditions that allow slavery and war to continue on this planet. It is the soul crying out. It demands response. And as we respond we will find the harmony. Yes, rap is filled with complaints and discord. Some rap songs are obviously produced by clouded minds, confused by their conditions. This is nothing new to music-making. Songs through the ages have advanced anarchy, chaos and war as a solution. Fortunately, we have survived and love prevails. Rap music is nothing more or less than fellow humans expressing themselves, searching for solace. They're involved in a war on poverty… class struggle. Some rap is inspiring, filled with revelry and joyful noise. Though, I must admit, I can't stand the cars that go BOOM, I, like you, have enjoyed cranking up the amps. Baba O'Reily (sp?) from the Who was one of those songs that always got me turning the knobs as far as they would go during the Viet Nam War. Teenage Wasteland Oh yeah Teenage Wasteland They're all wasted. War… What is it good for? Well. It's produced some decent music, I guess. … … … kevin P.S. FWIW I have been paying close attention. Crap means to make a point. You've made yours. I've made mine. Can we move on now?
