I certainly agree about illustrations making a document more visually appealling … it's just that I've never like what I would call `gratuitous illustrations' which is the commonest use that I've seen for lots of clipart. Illustrations really should be relevant to the text, and so bespoke clipart would seem to be rather more preferable (especially as publicly distributed clipart tends to appear in all sorts of places, and gets to look very stylised) I'm not knocking it though … there are many who find it very useful, it's just that I don't.
