Upgrade now, that way you won't have to learn twice. R3 does so many things better/different, that you might as well start now. Don't bother with the Cyrix chip. Go for a real DX2 66. All I can say is that I've regretted every sub-standard purchase I've ever made. I just recently upgraded to EISA and SCSI, and basically had to throw away a bunch of IDE and ISA stuff. I hate to see somebody get a second rate chip (they cost money, too) only to outgrow it in a few months. You'll probably get into more and more complicated anims as you get more familiar with 3DS (that's what happened to me), and the rule of thumb on hardware is this: More RAM, more HD space, faster graphics card, as many machines as you can afford.
