Putting 16 bit RAM on the HC8 makes sense to speed it up because otherwise you're DMA'ing into CHIP RAM (no other memory in lower 24 bit address space). If you're using any half decent AGA mode for display then your HC8 is competing with the custom chips. Even a 1MB SIMM (about $40) will help a lot I believe.
