They will learn, in time, what works and what does not. Effects are cool, but as you said you can't loose the *communication message*. I find that when the raw footage is good — the effects are very limited — "a smooth fade perhaps". Five stills for a :30, — another SFX spot. I tend to review after a four week period — did I do good? Also noting what the networks are doing also helps to generate ideas. The results are that my "look" changes alot, though my peers can spot my stuff regardless. That's good in my book.
