Well, maybe my point isn't quite clear…let me try some more…
Let's try with an english class – There are national criteria which exist for
competencies within the content. Should we dictate to all english professors
that in chapter one we will all deliver a paper on (whatever) and that in
chapter two we will deliver…
I do not agree that certain competencies are not important. I do disagree that
the paths to those competencies should be dictated. (I also agree that I am a
drafting instructor that should go back and take another english class after
that double negative! – just trying to lighten this up a touch…)
Actuall, a problem that can exist in drafting education is to train the
students on a steady diet of "canned" exercises. Many of the CAD textbooks
that exist today are very guilty of this… they take you though a
"step-by-step" exercise of how to draw a 3d chair but when the student is done
they cannot create a 3d table because the commands are not spoon fed to them.
Critical Thinging Skills is a very important topic in American education
today…we must be careful not to lose sight of that goal by dictating
curriculum. Don't take my word for it…ask any University Professor how they
feel about having their classes "set" for them. In Montana, academic freedom
is written into our contracts…
As for "speaking from the heart"…Why should an individual be willing to
compromise their beliefs by not endorsing them?
