Your method is sound and should be able to produce decent results. Try rendering your image to more closely match your output device – the HP500C. If this unit can do 300 dpi in color (I have no idea of its specifications) render a 24 bit TIF file at 8.5" * 300 pixels (dots) x 11" * 300 pixels which multiplies out to 2550 x 3300. Render it to a file with no display device selected. This file will be huge in Mbytes and you probably would get satisfactory results with 150 dpi as your multiplier. When you print out of windows make sure you print the image to fit the page. For larger prints just create proportionally larger image files to maintain the resolution. If your windows programs support JPEG I would chose this format as it can greatly reduce your file size and give great results.
