Brian,
IBM and Apple corporate cultures are actually becoming quite similar. I agree,
simple survival dictates the merger of both. And I think tha that will happen,
to the detriment of Apple. I think the Mac OS will become a division of IBM to
serve the graphics arts world (which by the way is _huge_ and still really
untapped by even Apple). OS/2 (or whatever) will acquire the rest of the
attributes of the Mac user interface, which, aside fromt NeXT, is the best user
interface on the planet.
I follow your points re corporations not switching to OS/2, but the cost is
really not the issue. OS/2 can be had for about the same as a Windows upgrade.
And right now, OS/2 runs Windows better than Windows itself!
What I really can't understand is IBM's not getting developer tools into the
hands of everyone they could think of – and for free. Not only have OS/2 tools
been hard to come by – they they have been almost twice as expensive as
Microsoft's.
