I just jumped in on the thread, so I'm not sure what exactly you are talking about. But, I also had a problem with the background image file in rendering. The problem was this. 3D Studio wants the background image to be the same size as the file you are rendering to. If not, it chops the image or shows a blank space. To remedy this use Video post. Instead of designating a background in the 3D Editor, put your background on the first line of Video Post and put the 3D scene on the second line. Then 3D Studio will resize the background to the size of the output image (assuming you set the VP properties of the background image correctly). If this wasn't your problem, sorry.
