For 4 months I outputted the PAR via YIQ signals to the UVW-1800. The most critical job I did was for the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. They needed a very high quality animation recording because it was going to the big screen in video. TWO 30 foot screens were used before an audience of several thousand. The animation blended very well with the the rest of the betacam SP production. My sample for the bid was up against an Abekas DDR and an SGI running Wavefront. I was told the bidding was very close but I won. Quality was not an issue for me because my PAR output to betacam SP met their quality requirements. The only bidders that were disqualified due to quality were two local companies that output to beta SP via the Toaster/Lightwave. It used Y/C and was single framed with a BCD controller. I was told their output didn't cut it due to bleeding color on the big screen. The actual way they described it was the "Animation was out of focus in their audition tape." Now, I don't know what your intended market is nor who you have to sell but IMO there is no reason why, if you are very careful you can't go broadcast with the PAR to beta SP. If the application is critical and you use pro SVHS I can almost assure you you will be the looser in any bid where you are compared with betacam, even though you are using Y/C. It's the recording process, Betacam SP, there is no substitute! (Except for, maybe MII, but then you have to seek out customers that can use MII <BG>) And, the price of betacam SP UVW is just too good to pass up. As for generation loss. I can tell you that 5 component generations of UVW betacam SP looks cleaner than 1st generation SVHS. There were many here on the forum that have been very negative with respect to the PAR and its use in broadcast. I decided to just ignore all of them and start selling my stuff and getting on with my life. If I ran into a customer that became nervous about the equipment without bothering to look at the output I just refered them to my competitors with the Wavefront and the Abekas. I decided these guys were probably too picky to bother with. There are just too many good customers out there to be concerned about the clients from hell.
