Windows Debate
Well, actually Windows did "walk" my program – it was definitely too slow
to call it "running". 🙂
I know about going into the PIF editor to change some of the parameters,
but the defaults did look reasonable to me. I've experimented with running
this game on 3 different MS-DOS multitasking kludges: Windows, Desqview,
and SimulTask386 running on a SVR3 unix system. The simultask was a little
flakey (primarily 'cause I didn't have the mouse configured quite right),
but didn't show nearly the type of slowdown that Windows does. Desqview
adds so little detectable overhead that the performance is not noticably
worse than when running it on the same machine without any multi-tasking
system. Of course, it does slow down when running under Desqview if I have
a "make" running in the background, but even then it's much faster overall
than when running under Windows with nothing else significant running.
What can I say? The public (and the trade press) seems willing to buy
anything that Bill Gates says is good for them.
