I'm not so sure the quality is "so far below" professional film
quality. Those slides are being scanned at 2048×3072 pixels. A 35mm
slide has an image size of 24x36mm, so that works out to 85.333 pixels/mm.
When I was doing 'fine resolution' 35mm stuff, the 'standard' was
Panatomic-X (no longer made, <sigh>) and Rodinal which gave you about 100
'lines'/mm. I'm not sure what the conversion is from 'lines' to 'pixels'
but color was never as good as b&w anyhow.
