The humbuckers work for a slightly different reason, but I don't want to get into that now. The reason for using the 1/4 wave stub is based on antenna theory of radio propagation. This is the problem you have to deal with. Its not powerline spikes nor hum, its a transmitted radio station's signal. And, we'll assume that the station is transmitting a legal signal. The problem lies in your end as a receiver. The complete antenna in any receiver is comprised of the entire circuit of the Ground (physical earth) the path to the electronics (your computer network) and the wires extending from your electronics. Now it's this area that the issue gets confusing since you view your computer network as what it is, but, in this case I view it as a radio receiver and all its associated components. A heterodyne receiver uses a local oscillator to beat with the incoming radio signal from the antenna path (ground-case-wires above the ground) and produce a lower frequency that can be heard via a transducer (usually a speaker) The most convenient location to "trap" and short out this offending frequency is in the connecting cables in your network thin net which uses RG-58U. The formula is 468/ FMhz. x Vel factor. For non foam coax is 66% and for foam it is 79%. So, the length of the stub would be 3.428 feet. I would start with 43 inches and start trimming a 1/4 inch at a time. Insert this T in your network as close to the pentium as you can but between the two machines so as not to screw up the termination impedance of the network if the terminows where. I don't think its the speakers. It seems like a 3 rd or 4 th level harmonic. Like materials in the each tower are sympathetic at whatever resonance frequency I'm hearing. Its about akin to the little crystal radios. Sounds just the same. And its omni-directional and the biggest problem is that my physical presense inteferes with the signal when I get close to what seems to be the source. I bet if anyone knows what I'm going through you must. Its exasperating to say the least. I can handle the power supply thing without too much trouble I think. Although that's easily half a days work. 🙁 So the main question at this point is where do I put the T's if I've got 4 of these beasties sitting side by side. Would it help to relocate them? The RG58 is A/U. I don't know if that's foam core or not. Say is there anything I can do for you? I really appreciate this very specialized most esoteric help. Above and beyond the call of duty IMO.
