Hi Merle, just a few moments to drop in here, but wanted to add a bit to your
comments re appropriate problems for students.
1. Not sure what you were referring to as ".. have different shaped objects
and have the students measure and draw them." but Pullllllllease don't revert
back to what I call "mutilated blocks" that we all cut our teeth on! What the
#%$ were those things anyways??!!
2. You ARE right on target though about ".. contacting some local
industries for samples." ABSOLUTELY!! Nothing beats reality (well OK, virtual
reality is cool but, ……) And you are right it is NOT difficult to do once
you try it. You will also likely be amazed at the "spin off" effects and
benefits you will reap from this liaison with your business and industry
community.
I can tell you for instance that in assisting with technical direction for the
US national and the World CAD competitions, I insist that the "University of
the Real World" be the ONLY place we turn to for both the problems and the
judges. This has never failed to be anything less than a VERY powerful win-win
situation for all involved. So, go for it! You will be glad you did.
