>>This is the way it should be but I fear isn't the reality for much of our
profession.
For the current generation, sadly, perhaps. The one's that reject it
the hardest are the those that fear it the most. The younger
generation of architects and designers (currently in supportive
roles) are the ones REALLY catching on to the possiblities, seeing
what the future is and putting in the tme and dedication to learn
what they know is/will be soon a crtical skill.
The profession is evolving in many ways – those that ignore/refute
what visualization can provide are doomed to be passed up by those
that accept and excel at it.
>> With the fees being squeezed to nothing the design phases get shortened and
investigation of lighting, space, volume, proportion, material and acoustics
get streamlined and IMO oversimplified.<<
This is the real irony of it all! A designer that is skilled in modeling and
rendering, or has it at his/her disposal in the form of a support team (Perkins
& Will for example), can do more design permutations and do so in more depth,
in the same (if not less) amount of time.
