Both SLIP and PPP are both serial line communication protocols, they have nothing to do with graphics. SLIP stands for Serial In Line Protocol, PPP is Point to Point Protocol. PPP is much more robust, that's the one I would recommend. Basically, your computer makes a connection to another computer which is on on the 'net fulltime. Then another program is run to actually allow you to talk to the other computer, this second program can be a text shell or a graphical program, depending on what you want. Here I have a PPP connection to a local provider who has a T-1 connection to the Internet. After PPP connects us, I can then run a graphical program such as Mosaic, or a text program such as 'ftp' or 'gopher'. Hope this clears it up, there is a ton of things happening on the Internet, not the least of which is a good mailing list administered by Autodesk which pretty much parallels some of the threads here on CIS – but it's free!
