As a recent "acquiree" of 3DS. I admit that Lightwave is indeed more
intuitive and easier to use.
I would say that Lightwave is 3DS's closest competitor. But there are
additional advantages to 3DS other than just the IPAS plugins. (But these
are a big one!)
There is a much higher level of control. The interface pays for this in a
loss of intuitiveness. You can also set up a Render Farm on an existing
network without having to purchase any special software/hardware. This is
another major bonus.
