I think you touched on something that I'll spell out more clearly.
Computers are a very new entity to the consumer market. Cars, appliances, etc.
have clearly defined uses and, most importantly, are clearly accepted as
neccessary items for most people.
Currently, computers are still thought of as really necessary for only large
businesses and government. Most people still feel a bit of insecurity in buying
a computer because it is seen as an expensive luxury by most non-computer users
which includes family and friends in many cases.
Because of this need to justify the purchase, the risk of criticism is very
great if a mistake is made.
