Personally, I think that you are right that Commodore won't be able to
produce a 386 BB at a reasonable price. However, they will have to if they
want to provide IBM compatibility.
IMHO, the way MS is pushing Windows 3.0 combined with the way Intel is
discounting the 386sx will pretty much obsolete the 286 in any incarnation.
Hardware-wise, the differences between a board that can use a 286 and a
board that can use a 386sx are trivial, so CBM should be able to produce a
386sx BB (even with VGA) at a sellable price-point. Of course, increasing
the speed of the board to 20 MHz might cause a problem with noise, but it
shouldn't be too difficult to fix. A board like this would be far better
than any 286.
