John,
Well, better companies than Commodore have tried to stop mail-order, and none
that I know of have succeeded. As I told Richard, my first two computers were
purchased locally. Those were primarily business machines, and I was very
concerned about support. I let my guard down when I bought the AMIGA. I
mistakenly assumed that the bugs had been worked out in the 1000. Little did I
know that the 500 would be as questionable as it appears to be.
Please don't misunderstand. I think the AMIGA is a remarkable machine, and I'm
having lots of fun with it. But apparently Commodore has cut corners more than
they should have, and if their service policies are such that the AMIGA can't
be repaired quickly, it's a safe bet that the AMIGA's status as primarily a
home/entertainment machine will not change. And maybe that isn't all bad.
By the way, it appears that I will get the 8520 replaced quickly by a local
dealer. After I finally offered to pay for the replacement, the dealer
relented and said they would do the work under warranty.
Thanks again for your interest.
Mike
P.S. For what it's worth, my invoice is dated pre-Jan 1.
