I dunno. I worry about the Mac. By giving people an "easy to use" interface like the Mac GUI you tend to end up with a lot of people who are using a computer without learning anything about how a computer really works. This is fine on one side since it makes it faster for people to get started, but it's also resulting in a lot of people who couldn't handle some of the more trivial computer problems which come up. A GUI is nice, and makes things easier, yes, but it's hardly necessary to have one to use a machine. The vast majority of computer users have actually never yet used a GUI and have gotten along just fine. And I would, in general, feel better trusting one of those people to fix a computer problem than one who has never touched a command line interface. As a parallel, it's like learning Long Division. Why learn long division when you have a calculator which can do it for you? Or perhaps more ominously, why learn to *read* when you have a TV to tell you the news and entertain you and tell you everything you need to know? It really does worry me that the concept of "computer literacy" nowadays is limited to being able to point and click with a GUI. Something to think about. –>Steve Bennett
