>> is there anymore info on setting up and managing image files on a network?<<
Well Richard that depends on who you ask. I imagine you'll get a
variety of answers. But the solution, I'm absolutely thrilled with is
having a seperate file server, and rendering everything to it. It
also has a framebuffer for output. And I keep pushing it by making it
do more things, like it now has a CD-ROM on it with the World
Creation Toolkit, with Workstations sharing it, as well as the 3DSNET
file which keeps track of which system is rendering what. You have
to think through what makes sense to you in terms of what resources
you have but I'm using a 386/40 and it hasn't bottlenecked at all.
I've also put things to tape from a networked Workstation rather than
from the file server without incident. I'm using SCSI's on the file
server and as the need requires I will add more, creating a bank.
This means that any additional workstations I decide to build won't
need much except fast cpu's and lots of memory, a small hard drive
and a vga card. I haven't found any limitations to this approach yet.
If you do share texture maps with LAN 5 I've been told you need to
make them read-only. I haven't gotten that far yet. But its the next
step in a wonderful journey.
