I think it was not later than 1820 – maybe even closer to 1800. If another quake of that magnitude happens, there will be tremendous damage and loss of life, I'm sure. I once read the complete works of Mark Twain, but it's been a while. But the Mississippi does not take kindly to attempts to tame it.
