Hi John! I just wanted to drop my 5 cents in on this subject. I think the
problem with shareware is that once it's in your hand you tend not to have
any motivation to pay for it. The only motivation is guilt! I think that a
lot of user groups can do more good than individuals. A user group could
put together disk of shareware and sell it for little more than the usual
PD disks (like for $6 instead of $3). Then the extra money could be donated
to the authors. Since user group librarians are usually more sympathetic
towards shareware producers they'd remmember to send in the money. As for
the poor guy who uses shareware, he'll just have to put a little money up
front and then will not have feel guilty. In fact, our NYC users group
AMUSE, did something like it – it gave some money to a number of people who
contributed useful PD software for the Amiga (I got one of those checks).
Although the amount would not cover anyone's rent, it's nice to feel
appreciated. Another idea (also started by AMUSE) is to have the user group
"commision" a piece of software. This way the progammers can some money,
and everyone gets a nice PD program. …so what do you
think…….Richie…
