Pathetic though the San Diego Library system is, it does have some books on the subject if they haven't been lost or stolen Anyway, Pt Loma and Mt Soledad are chunks of the mainland isolated from San Diego by the Rose Canyon fault and from each other by an unnamed (?) fault that runs somewhere under the South end of Mission Bay. The rocks at Pt Loma have remained horizontal. The Mt Soledad block has been uplifted at the North and depressed at the South. Most of the canyons cut into the mesas are erosional — the exception being Rose Canyon (I5 from Mission Bay to the Canyon elbow at Gilman Drive) and maybe the San Diego River Gorge which runs straight East from that (unnamed?) East/West fault under Mission Bay. There have, so far as I know, never been any quakes on any of the faults in the San Diego area since the Spanish showed up in the 18th Century. Maybe they actually are inactive. Now that I think about it, call the Museum of Natural History in Balboa Park and ask them.
