Producing a 16 bit version of Elastic Reality really wasn't a possibility.
This is so for many reasons including (1) Elastic Reality is a cross platform
product who's code must be shared across platforms which have no concept of
16 versus 32 bit apps (and instead use flat memory models) and (2) the
internals of Elastic Reality thoroughly depend upon really big numbers
and really small numbers…both dependencies making the use of 16 bit
arithmetic (even for the simulations of floating point) into a seriously
difficult task.
While it may not be, as you say, right to make a blanket statement about
all apps running faster under NT, we can say that Elastic Reality is already
32 bit and any work to make it back into a 16 bit application would simply
get in the way of our producing new *and different* products without much
gain.
