I can't remember exactly how we came to this conclusion, but it was obvious that something was wrong when consecutive runs of Scandisk kept giving more and more reports of bad clusters. As I recall, we finally ran Scandisk *without* a surface scan, just to make sure there were no FAT problems or bad clusters, then went directly to Defrag, and, voila, Scandisk's surface scan found no errors. The best thing would be to back up the hard drive, re-format, and re-load the software. I personally am convinced there is a subtle bug in Scandisk's surface scan, but I'm not sure what triggers it. BTW, speaking of backups, I just purchased a new Colorado Jumbo 1400 1.4 gig internal tape backup. They aren't even advertised yet, but the list is only $429, and includes a blank tape, (680 megs uncompressed), and a 16 bit ISA controller for backup speeds of 17 megs/minute. It will also read and restore tapes made with the all the lower capacity Jumbo and Trakker units, (though it will only write backups to the higher capacity tapes). I'm installing it later today; hope it all goes well. 'Just about the most inexpensive archival storage I've seen. John
