Blaise (and Dave, and Jon and Steve et al)– Thanks again for letting me rant. The therapeutic value is indeed a very real thing… I agree completely with your assessment of the situation, and that customer education is a vital part of solving situations that can be aggravating at the least, and possibly fatal to vendor-client relations at the worst. Obviously, the business of the professioanl typographer is in upheaval; rather than being afraid of it, I'm excited (in part, because at least *I* don't have any serious employment worries for the forseeable future). Not everyone in the business has been so quick to grasp this, however–you'd be surprised how many of my professional peers don't believe a job is truly "typeset" unless every keystroke is punched by a typesetter. Scanned or imported text just does not count. Unfortunately for me, our woner is the salesman on this account, and he has a blind spot there (as we all do at times). He's afraid that *helping* them overcome their in-house problems will kill our business; and attitude I find incredibly short-shighted. Maybe it's the rose-colored glasses, but I feel that it's this sort of crap (like Jon's Berling tale) that will eventually win out. [More]
