Working at home has no gender barriers. Also, I found that clients are
notoriously inconsiderate when dealing with people who work out of their
homes and have children. Case in point: one of my clients is a defense
contracting company for which I produce a monthly newsletter. I went there
for a conference and had to bring my then-3-month-old son with me, as the
meeting was last-minute and no sitter was available.
It turned out that this company had a policy of No Children. So we were
forced to hold our meeting in the lobby of the office building. Ever since,
my contact with the company always asks if doing the newsletter isn't
interfering with my mothering, and I can tell they are almost expecting me
to give it up. They often seem surprised that I complete it on schedule
every month. (I only skipped doing it the month Ian was born, since the
deadline was ten days after the birth).
