During the hearings which led to the 1976 Copyright Act being passed
the question of copyright protection of typeface designs was raised and
rejected.
Certain foreign companies such as Letraset do indeed print the
copyright notice on their products (e.g. transfer lettering sheets) but
unless there has been a recent change in U.S. law of which I'm not aware,
this notice provides no protection for the type itself only the design of
the sheet.
