I posted a message on the lawyers' forum asking for more information on
copyrights, etc with regard to font designs. The responses so far have not
been particularly enlightening (but since when do lawyers come up with "yes
or no" answers…). I'm still at a loss to explain why Cg created Helios (a
very bad cut of Helvetica) when they could have just copied the original
and renamed it. From the sound of one of the lawyer's responses, it seems
that individual letter forms can be protected under a design patent.
Perhaps that's the *real* protection under US law that prevents wholesale
copying of font libraries. I'll keep you posted on whatever else the legal
eagles come up with.
